This year, our summer intern had a slightly different experience than our interns in previous years, but he definitely made the best of it! Nick Lyon, a senior Civil Engineering student at Cal Poly SLO, said this of his experience working with our office:
“My time at BOG has been a hugely beneficial learning experience from start to finish. I have had the great privilege of working under experienced and talented structural engineers in the office as well as out in the field. I worked on various projects that provided me with knowledge of all the major building materials (steel, reinforced concrete, timber, and concrete masonry unit). I also grew my understanding of seismic analysis/design of structures. In addition, I became comfortable with the application of ASCE7-16 and the 2019 California Building Code.”
Adapting to the Changes of 2020
After working remotely for several months, our office has adapted to Covid-19 by practicing social distancing, wearing masks, and taking temperatures every morning, as well as providing ongoing remote access for those that need to work from home. Despite the unpredictable circumstances that this year has brought, we are thankful that we were able to build a relationship and mentor this bright young mind!
Real World Experiences Inspire
“Without a doubt, the highlights of my internship were the site visits that I had the privilege of going on. With the guidance of experienced individuals at BOG, I was able to visit schools, office buildings, and active construction sites. These visits afforded me the opportunity to see the physical product that comes from the work done in the office. These learning experiences were sources of great motivation because they inspired me to one day have my work on display and functioning in the real world.”
Throughout his time here, Nick showed great initiative and professional growth, and we are excited to see where the future leads him. We are grateful to have been a part of his journey to becoming a structural engineer, and we wish him the very best!
