Orange Gets Greener: BOG Completes Orange Coast College’s New Recycling Center

By Kevin Westervelt – January 5, 2018

OCC Recycling Center-Photos by Nils Timm The fruitful product of Orange County’s Measure M, Orange Coast College’s (OCC) Recycling Center has recently been completed—and it’s beautiful! BOG is so pleased to be a part of this “green” project. The Center will handle the college’s and the surrounding communities’ recycled material, serving up to 300 residents everyday.

OCC Recyling Center- Photos by Nils TimmThe Center is earmarked for LEED certification, and embodies the long-standing culture of sustainability so important to the campus and the greater Costa Mesa community. OCC is dedicated to supporting a clean environment. This high-performance and highly visible project is on track for multiple sustainable certifications, including Zero Net Energy. Students will operate the Center, thus providing jobs, scholarships and leadership training in addition to funding support for other student services. Dougherty Architects, the project’s designer, collaborated with students, college and district representatives during the strategic master planning and programming through design and construction. The new building replaces the previous undersized facility.

Structural systems include:
• Concrete masonry unit and steel construction to meet deadlines and budget requirements.
• Recycled materials used for sustainable design.
• Roofs designed to support solar panel photovoltaic arrays.

BOG services provided:
• Preliminary Design
